Dodging Greg Davis takes a vacation instead of helping flood victims

BOONEVILLE (Friday, May 9, 2008) – Republican Greg Davis continually dodges questions about his position on trade, jobs and record of raising the gas tax.

But in 2005, Mayor Davis dodged Southaven residents who were facing a natural disaster – while Southaven homes and businesses were flooded, Davis took a vacation.

In July 2005, while the city of Southaven was dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Dennis and 200 displaced residents, Mayor Davis chose to go on vacation. Davis did, however, leave his secretary to fill a message book with page after page of pleas for help and complaints, and the city's administrator admitted that the municipal employees were spread thin. ( The Commercial Appeal , 7/21/05)

“Here in North Mississippi people take care of each other, and we need a congressman who will work for them in good and bad times,” said Terry R. Cassreino, spokesman for Travis Childers. “While Southaven was flooded and 200 families and local businesses needed help, Mayor Greg Davis dodged his responsibilities to his neighbors and skipped town to go on vacation. Greg Davis has proven time and again that he only looks out for himself, while Travis Childers will always put the people he's working for first.”

Because Davis was on vacation, he missed the Southaven Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting officially declaring the floods a disaster ( The Commercial Appeal , 7/20/05). He also left his administrative assistant to field requests from flood victims.

Six days after the flood, while Davis was still on vacation, his administrative assistant showed The Commercial Appeal her message book listing all the messages from flood victims asking for help. She showed the paper the 52 messages she had received, only one of which was a thank you. ( The Commercial Appeal , 7/21/05)
