Davis dodges opposition to education
Greg Davis will vote against the needs of Mississippi teachers and students

BOONEVILLE (Thursday, May 1, 2008) – As Greg Davis dodges questions about why he voted against public education while he was in the state Legislature, former Gov. William Winter praised Democrat Travis Childers for his staunch support of education.

As a state House member in 1997, Davis voted to uphold Gov. Kirk Fordice's veto of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program. The program revised the funding formula for public schools and is designed to guarantee local school districts have the money they need to provide a proper education for Mississippi children (Veto Override Vote for S.B. 2649, 4/23/97).

Childers, who strongly supports investments in our children's education, today joined Winter and state House Speaker Billy McCoy in Booneville – where the former governor spoke to an elementary school class. Winter, known as the “Education Governor,” helped guide the landmark Education Reform Act of 1982 to passage in the Legislature.

“The voters of North Mississippi deserve to know why Greg Davis would not support our schools and investing in our children,” Childers said. “It is time for Greg Davis to stop dodging the issues and tell voters why he raised taxes, opposed education and bought a $27,000 car at taxpayer expense.”

5 Questions Greg Davis Continues to Dodge:

  • Will Greg Davis ever sign a “No New Trade Deals” Pledge?
  • Will Greg Davis ever release a statement condemning Rev. Wright?
  • Will Greg Davis take a stand on the Colombia Free Trade Agreement in Congress that will cost us jobs?
  • Why did Greg Davis oppose fully funding education for the children of Mississippi ?
  • How can Greg Davis be trusted to look out for the people of North Mississippi when he takes money from Big Oil companies and has a history of raising taxes on working families?
