Travis Childers wins Mississippi
special election 49 percent - 46 percent
Childers wins most votes in third straight election in 9 weeks
BOONEVILLE (Tuesday, April 22, 2008) – Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, the Democratic candidate for Mississippi's 1st Congressional District, won today's special election by 2,000 votes, or 49.4 percent.
Childers' commonsense values and positive leadership connected with the people of North Mississippi , driving more people to vote for Childers for the third time in less than two months.
“The people of North Mississippi have said they want a leader who is focused on creating jobs, fiscal responsibility and Mississippi values. The people of this district want a congressman in these tough times who understands their concerns and who will work with both parties to get things done for North Mississippi ,” Childers said.
Childers won two-thirds of the 1st District's counties, showing his broad ap peal across North Mississippi .
“Families in North Mississippi are working harder and still finding it more difficult to make ends meet. I will continue to reach out to voters across North Mississippi in these next three weeks and make sure they know that I will go to Washington and stand up for their needs,” Childers said.
Because none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote, Childers advances to a runoff election on Tuesday, May 13. The winner of that election will serve the remainder of the unexpired term for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House. # # # |
