Congressman Travis Childers “Goes to Work” for DeSoto County
Childers Continues “Work Week” for North Mississippi Small Businesses, Discusses Economic Outlook with Voters
Booneville , MS – Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS) “went to work” for DeSoto County today, continuing his district-wide “work week” at Usry Grocery in Nesbit. He bagged groceries, ran the cash register, and spoke with voters about his record of helping to create jobs and provide relief for North Mississippi 's working families during difficult economic times. Later this week, the Congressman will also spend time as an employee at small businesses in Lee and Grenada Counties .
“The people of DeSoto County and North Mississippi are facing tough times, and they need a congressman who understands tough times,” said Congressman Childers. “I began working as a high school student to support my mother and sister, and one of my very first jobs was at a local grocery store. Later, I started my own small businesses. As Congressman, I've stood up for working families. I've fought for balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility, voting against my party's excessive budget and twice against a bailout of Wall Street big shots that put $700 billion of debt on the shoulders of hard-working North Mississippians .”
Congressman Childers has small business experience as an owner and manager Travis Childers Realty & Associates and the Landmark Nursing Center and Community home. Before taking office in Washington , Congressman Childers served as Prentiss County Chancery Clerk for 16 years. As the county government's chief financial officer, he helped created 1,000 jobs and balanced 16 consecutive budgets.
In Washington , the Congressman has worked to stimulate small business growth to help put the overall economy back on track. The first bill he introduced in Congress was the Invest in Small Business Act to promote small business development by cutting taxes on investors and increasing the number of small businesses eligible for tax cuts. Congressman Childers also cosponsored the bipartisan Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Act to make it easier for small businesses to provide quality, affordable health care for their employees.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Mississippi has the third highest unemployment rate in the country and is one of only four states with a jobless rate higher than seven percent. Congressman Childers serves on the House Financial Services Committee, where he provides a voice for North Mississippi on important legislation affecting jobs and the economy. ### |
