Travis Childers Tours Corinth Furniture Plant, Discusses Effects of Struggling Economy

Booneville , MS – Today, Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS) toured a Corinth furniture plant that closed for the first day in months due to slow business. The Congressman met with Plant Manager Mark Coombs to discuss how the state of the economy has affected business and working families in North Mississippi , and share his solutions.

“The furniture industry is one of the pillars of North Mississippi 's economic growth and development,” said Congressman Childers. “Our current financial crisis and credit crunch have prevented Americans from receiving credit approval to purchase sofas, chairs, and other pieces of furniture. More and more plants are being forced to lay off workers, cut back hours, or even close.

“We have to get our economy back on track. Congress needs to balance the government budget, decrease the amount of debt placed on average Americans, and promote small business growth. We need to put a stop to bad trade deals and bring jobs back home. If reelected in November, I'll continue to stand up for North Mississippians on the Financial Services Committee and fight for fiscal responsibility as a member of the conservative Blue Dog Coalition. We're facing tough times. I understand tough times and will continue to fight for hard-working North Mississippi families.”

“I thank Congressman Childers for his continued efforts to encourage economic development and create jobs in North Mississippi,” said Edwin Coleman, a local owner of North Mississippi furniture plants. “As a small business man, the Congressman understands how to meet payroll. He created 1,000 jobs and balanced 16 consecutive budgets as Chancery Clerk, and has worked towards a more fiscally responsible government as our Congressman. I look forward to reelecting him in November so he can continue what he started.”

Since taking office in May, Congressman Childers has worked with both Republicans and Democrats to improve economic conditions and decrease the burden of the nation's financial crisis on North Mississippi families. The Congressman voted twice against the $700 billion financial bailout to avoid placing an additional $2,800 of debt on every American.

The first piece of legislation Congressman Childers introduced in office was the Invest in Small Business Act to encourage investment in Mississippi small businesses by cutting taxes on investors and increasing the number of small businesses eligible for tax cuts.
